Should You Disinfect Your Packages & Mail Before Touching?

Updated: Jul 30, 2020

With home deliveries skyrocketing because of the coronavirus pandemic, you may have wondered if you should be disinfecting your packages and mail and how to safely unpack newly arrived goods. You’ve been diligent about keeping your place clean in the wake of COVID-19, however, it’s practically impossible to keep the outside world from not entering your home in some form or fashion.

While it is technically possible for a package or mail arriving at your home to be contaminated with COVID-19, the risk of contamination is very low.  COVID-19 is believed to last on cardboard for about 24 hours and unlike plastic surfaces, cardboard is porous. This means a droplet would likely penetrate into the mail or package and may not even be spreadable to the touch. At the end of the day though the risk is never zero.

Let's discuss some preventative measures you can do to help against the contraction of COVID-19. When it comes to package and mail deliveries, try to keep apart from the person delivering the package. You can also wipe down or spray the package before you open it, and thoroughly wash your hands after disposing of the packaging. Don’t keep the package or mail on your countertop or other high traffic areas as it could potentially contaminate other household items. Also, clean your physical mailbox and disinfect the surface with the appropriate disinfectant spray.

Although we are living in uncharted and scary times it is important to keep a certain level of composure. While there is no sure-fire way to prevent the spread of the virus, simply washing your hands often is one of the best and most important things you can do. You can also take extra precautions by spraying or wiping down mail and packages.

It is important to mention that the CDC, World Health Organization, and Surgeon General, have all stated that there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 is being spread through the mail. With that being said there is no harm in taking extra precaution in keeping yourself and your loved ones safe.
